What we do

Light, hand and material.

We think of a room as a long conversation between light, hand and material. Our job is to set the terms, then step back.

  1. 01

    Whole interiors

Layout, lighting, finishes and furniture for a home or workplace, drawn as one piece.

  2. 02

    Joinery & furniture

Kitchens, libraries, beds and tables, made with three workshops we have known for a decade.

  3. 03

    Material direction

A palette, a sample box and a short book of details for architects and owners who build their own.

Rooms

Six rooms, three homes.

Material palette

Six materials, made to age together.

Each project gets a sample box before a single drawing is final. These six appear in almost every one.

Process

Four steps, no surprises.

Our full process
  1. 012–3 weeks

    Listen

We visit, measure and watch how the rooms are used at different hours. You tell us what to keep.

  2. 026–10 weeks

    Draw

Plans, elevations and a sample box of every material. One clear scheme, not three to choose from.

  3. 033–9 months

    Make

Our workshops build the joinery and furniture while trades finish the shell. We are on site weekly.

  4. 04First year

    Live

We return after a season to adjust lighting, oil the timber and see what the rooms need next.

Questions

Before you write.

Short answers to what most people ask in their first letter.

Ask something else
01Do you take on interiors without the architecture?

Yes. About half of our interiors work is for buildings designed by others, or for owners renovating an existing home. We work happily alongside another architect.

02What is the smallest project you accept?

A single room with joinery, such as a kitchen or a library, usually from €40,000 including making. Material direction alone starts as a fixed fee.

03How are your fees structured?

A fixed fee for listening and drawing, agreed before we begin, then a percentage of the making budget for supervision. No mark-up on furniture or materials.

04Can we reuse furniture we already own?

Always. We start with an inventory of what you love and draw around it. Restoring an old table is often the best piece in the room.

05Do you work outside Portugal?

Yes, in Spain and southern France, and occasionally further. Our workshops ship joinery, and we plan site visits in longer blocks.

06How long until we can move in?

For a whole home, plan on eight to fourteen months from first visit. A single room can be finished in three to four.
