Statement
Across the Alentejo, new houses, wineries and small museums are being built in board-marked concrete: thick walls, few openings and roofs that cut a hard line against the sky.
I photographed them only between twelve and two, the hours a photographer is taught to avoid. At noon the shadows fall straight down, the colour drains out, and the buildings show only their shape and the thin lines of light they let in.
