Statement
Buildings are organised around their stairs. A stair climbs the full height of the house, often lit from above, and every room opens off it. It is the spine and the lung of the building.
I asked to photograph the stairs and passages of forty buildings in and around Porto and was allowed into sixteen. Each picture stands at a threshold: a landing, a turn, the lowest step. The light changes from building to building; the gesture does not.
